Get to Know Our Dance Teachers

November 8, 2014

Happy Birthday Miss Caitlyn!

Miss Caitlyn danced with Fitzsimmons growing up and went on to The University at Buffalo where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Performing Arts in 2007. She moved to Mexico and then Brazil to continue on dancing, but finally decided to settle back down here in Fairport with her husband (who she met in Mexico)! We are beyond lucky and grateful that we have Miss Caitlyn back teaching at the studio now! For her birthday today, we wanted to do something special for her and put the spotlight on some of her favorite dance memories and personal fun facts about herself!

What is your first memory as a dancer?

Being too scared of asking to go to the bathroom and then peeing on the floor.

What is your first memory in a performance?

This isn’t my very first memory, but one that impacted me the most. The first time I performed a solo on stage I forgot my dance and just ended up doing step ball changes around in a circle. I was so embarrassed but my mom told me that life is about learning from these situations. Everyone falls, but the ones who succeed are the ones who get back up fearlessly.

What drew you to dance?

My older sister. I wanted to do anything that she did. And I wanted to do it better! Typical second child syndrome.

What is your funniest memory dancing in class or on stage?

See number 1.

What dancer was your inspiration growing up?

I always looked up to the older dancers at FDF and was so inspired by them! I couldn’t wait to be able to do what they were doing!

What was the color of your first costume/description?

It was some green tutu costume with like weird, scaly sequins and a feather headpiece. Classic 80’s.

How many years have you been teaching?

I started teaching in 2008 when I was in college. I’ve been on and off since. FDF can’t seem to get rid of me!

What is your favorite part about teaching?

It will always and forever be watching students grow, learn and improve. Not only in dance but in life.

What is your funniest moment from teaching?

There are too many wonderful, hysterical, amazing moments at FDF to even start. I try to bring humor and love to every class and every student. I think giving every day a smile makes it a successful day!

What is the most recent song played on your iPod?

Well, the most played artist on my iPod is Van Morrison. His voice brings me right back to my childhood going through my parents records. One of my dreams is to see him play live!

What is your favorite color?

Green

What is your favorite book?

The Giver

What is your favorite TV show?

Eeek!! I don’t have cable. But Seinfeld is probably my favorite show of all time. And I’m always binge watching a TV show on Netflix.

What is your favorite movie?

The Wizard of Oz or Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I can’t decide!

What is your favorite Broadway show?

Rent. I cry every time.

Who is your favorite dancer?

Fred Astaire – such a classy guy!

What is your favorite season?

Fall. Love fall food, clothes, and activities!

What is your favorite game?

This one is pretty fun!

What is your favorite food?

Anything with cheese!!!

What is your favorite travel spot?

Punta Sur in Cozumel, Mexico. I lived in Mexico for a year and that is by far the most beautiful unknown beach in Mexico!

Anything you want to mention about your family?

My in-laws don’t speak a lick of English. I’m trying to learn Portuguese but unfortunately failing.

I feel great about my family. We genuinely like each other so that’s good. My dad kind of looks like Jeff Bridges and my sister and I look identical (we’re 2 years apart).

Thank you, Miss Caitlyn for taking the time to let us put the spot light on you. Happy Birthday!!
